A Magical Homecoming: Amanda & Scott’s Intimate Scottish Forest Elopement
From America to the rugged beauty of Scotland, Amanda and Scott’s elopement wasn't just a wedding: it was a homecoming.
While they both grew up in the same American neighbourhood and had known of each other for years, it wasn’t until they reconnected a few years ago that the sparks truly flew. Scott, knowing a good thing when he saw it, gave Amanda a romantic ultimatum: it was either being together, or never seeing each other again. Amanda chose forever.
Because Scott’s father and grandfather are Glaswegians, the couple knew their forever had to begin in Scotland. But planning a destination wedding from thousands of miles away can be incredibly daunting. How do you choose a location when you don't know the landscape, the geography, or how it truly feels to stand there?
That’s where I came in.
Humanist celebrant Martin Turner created a lovely personal and thoughtful ceremony!
Navigating the Unknown: The Local Advantage
As a local, I absolutely love working with international couples. I understand how stressful it is to plan a wedding from across an ocean, wondering if the place you see on a screen will live up to your dreams. To take the guesswork out of it for Amanda and Scott, I sent them a curated list of locations featuring real photos I had personally taken at previous elopements.
They fell in love with a magical, deeply textured forest location, trusting my local knowledge to guide them to the perfect spot.
Orchestrating the Perfect First Look & Ceremony
Originally, the plan was simple: they would get ready together and drive to the ceremony in the same car. However, knowing how emotional elopements are, I suggested keeping the "first look" a surprise.
To make it happen, I drove out to Amanda’s accommodation to help her into her wedding dress so Scott wouldn't catch a sneak peek beforehand. With Scott already heading down to the ceremony site, I drove the bride through the winding roads to the forest.
Standing amidst the towering trees, their first look was incredibly cute and filled with anticipation. The ceremony itself was deeply moving; watching them read their personal, heartfelt vows to one another in the quiet of the Scottish woods was easily the most emotional moment of the entire day.
To honour Scott's heritage, they chose to weave ancient Scottish customs into their ceremony. With celebrant Martin’s help, they "tied the knot" with a traditional handfasting and shared their first toast as husband and wife from a Quaich (the Scottish loving cup). It was a deeply emotional ceremony, filled with tears and laughter and hugs and kisses…
A moment alone…
The best thing about elopements is being able to enjoy a quiet time as a couple. The “Just Married” portraits are one of my favourite moments: Amanda and Scott were still buzzing and in disbelief at finally being husband and wife, and the joy and contentment really show in their portraits!
… before some pints!
After the ceremony, we decided to lean into the ultimate Scottish experience. Amanda and Scott, still in their wedding attire, strolled right into a traditional local pub down the road. The Lion and Unicorn is a fantastic pub, restaurant and accommodation dating back to the 1600s!
At first, the locals looked at them a bit funny: it’s not every day a stunning bride and groom walk in just looking for a drink! But the initial surprise quickly turned into classic Scottish warmth. The locals and the fantastic staff embraced them like they were part of the town, and they all were wonderfully welcoming.
All Amanda and Scott wanted to do was celebrate with a couple of pints and a game of pool, which is exactly what we did. To top off an already unforgettable day, they kindly invited me to join them for dinner afterwards, a gesture I deeply appreciated.
Amanda and Scott's day was the perfect blend of ancestral roots, breathtaking nature, and laid-back fun. It’s exactly why I love what I do.
